The new invention of the telegraph relayed the message from newly elected Abraham Lincoln calling for volunteers to preserve the Union. But took a horseback rider to spread the word everywhere and to reach central southern Iowa.
Our family research, so far has placed several members as those volunteers!
One father after seeing his son go off to the war decided to go as well.
In his middle fifties he became one of Iowa's only regiment of what was called the Graybeards!
How many ancestors have fought in this war?! A time to ponder.
