Romantic Christmas

Christmas became a romantic holiday for our family this year. Not one, but two proposals of marriage were given. My daughter received a beautiful engagement ring on Christmas morning. Must joy and excitement from her by phone till we all gathered to share her joy. All become excited to enjoy family time together. Delicious food was prepared by my family as I drove home form the E.R.the only bonus of having to work on Christmas morning. We then moved on to the gift wrapping contest then the exchanging of presents.
When everyone was finished opening gifts, my granddaughter receive a gift. It was presented by an actual on the knee proposal. She shed tears and very happily said, yes also. It looks to be two weddings in 2009. It reminded me that I had received my engagement ring for Christmas 40 years ago. How the passage of time seems to speed by so quickly.

The above picture is an altered cabinet card by Jeannette janson. You can find her beautiful work at www.etsy.com

Gift Wrapping Contest

New winner this year... is *Rebecca with her moving picture and Eco friendly recycled gift. The technology theme choice, definitely needs to be "You Tubed" to be fully appreciate all the activity of the gifts. They had music playing, Christmas picture shows of past memories, and much joy in the preparation. Will post later, when one of my family members post the display on You Tube. The granddaughters did a fun clever job as well. Maddy won with 2 wrapped gifts, that housed a remote car and controls so her gift traveled across the floor.

Roy Rogers Christmas

My family loves competition.. We have a gift wrapping contest. Big no-no never use a bag...
Actually our gift wrapping theme is technology. My DH thought that it would be fun to have to have a Roy Rogers Christmas. As I always like to decorate with the theme. The small tree is my theme tree. Last year's was Hawaii.
You may check out last year winners and celebration on you tube by clicking link.

Icy Wonderland

Winter has came and brought much ice and snow to begin our Christmas week. My youngest son arrived before the storm hit the Midwest. But tomorrow, his wife will come from Florida where it is 80 degrees. We have warned her to be prepared for a balmy 2 degrees. When she lands to joins us for the holiday week. She will find the cabin's wood stove to give her wonderful warmth as she comes from the Arctic blast here.

Tis the Season

The time for families to gather and projects to be completed is here... Doesn't it seem to come so very quickly? I so very much look forward to this season. I love all that is accomplished in this, so short of time. But the very best thing of all is the gathering of my family. The time is always so precious and so cherished by my Dh and Me!! How we look forward to everything coming together. I am off for another 3 days at work. So everyone finish up those last minute projects because the season is here...

Angel Exchange

I became a part of an angel exchange through Esty Cottage. We were to use any medium. My favorite is of course, textiles. This little angel was mailed last Wednesday to Minnesota.
That accomplished, I found myself busily getting ready for the holidays, as I was due for my 3 day weekend at the E.R. Now I find myself taking the morning slowly with my gingerbread tea and sitting by the warm fire. It has turned bitterly COLD! I went to work yesterday morn with temps at 58 degrees then to drive home with Arctic winds and sub zero temps....Brrrrr
Not an easy adjustment for my body.

Christmas Comes Early

My Dh and I picked up our Christmas present this week. An 8 week Doberman, called Rainbow Girl. We are still trying to agree on a family name. She came from Sho-me Kennels in St. Louis. She is very sweet and seems to be adjusting very well. Only one middle of the night wake-up calls daily.

We had one Dobie in the past but mostly, we have raised Goldens. But we have found ourselves dog less for several years. This has been a big step for us. Adjusting will be for all of us.

Our Products Have Changed...

The Today Show is how i occasionally begin some a.m.s... This morning it was on so i could check the weather forecast as we are receiving some freezing rain....
The subject was how our products have changed! Skippy Peanut Butter being very sneaky..
Look on the bottom of the jar, you will find a big indentations to take away an extra 2 tablespoons. Not changing the price, of course. How many of us look on the bottom of our products. Anyway if interested, you can check the Today Show website for more info.
It got me thinking... I remember being upset, when i was trying to collage an Altoids tin. When to my dismay, as i was trying to smooth the pic on the top, i found raised letters of the product. It use to be nice and flat easier to use. No longer to hurry to use the mints so i can use the tin. I need to find another media for my base. Any suggestions anyone??
Oh well, life is always changing some good, some much better, some disappointing..

O.M.B.C. Christmas Party

Christmas Book Club night always kicks off the holiday season for me. It was so much fun and enjoyed sharing our host, Brenda's beautiful home. Her decorations were so wonderful. She has a special gift and eye for making those holiday decor outstanding. The food as always was delicious and we found ourselves very full. we were able to prepare for the rest of the evening. We discussed Brenda's book, "One Fifth Avenue" by Candace Bushnell. Ratings were 2.5 to 4. We all agreed, we enjoyed reading about a lifestyle in New York and it was far removed from our simple lives. But, it was fun learning about the life of wealthy New Yorkers. It was agreed humorous and interesting read. thanks for the pick Brenda. The gift exchange of books read in 2008 keep us all guessing and lots of laughter as we opened the wonderful presents.
We miss you Tina and thought of you all evening. Otherwise all members were able to attend.
Thanks Brenda!!! Great night.

Snowtop cabin

Snow has arrived the last day of November and continued on the first. We have been trying to get the outside ready for the holidays. But, to our dismay not all of the lights work. Too far to head to town to obtain more. My helpful daughter will wait to work another day.
Tonight is book club Christmas party. Big night!!! My gift is completed and I hear our host is getting ready for the fun evening tonight! So many clues, we must remember in order to guess our gifts. We also will discuss this month's read of "One Fifth Avenue". Quite a story.. Don't believe, I could live in N.Y.C. after my peaceful life at the cabin!!!
Must go bake my bread for tonight and wrap my gift....

Yet another camera cam from the woodland perch. Our wild turkey family.
We believe these are the babies, we have been watching grow all summer.
They have survived!!! No turkey platter for them!
I have many blessings to count and will be enjoying the time, I spend with my family.
Family is definitely a gift from God.... Happy Thanksgiving to families everywhere.
May it be blessed.

Hannah's Dream

Just an update... I received a few comments on this book pick. It was Valerie's month and she chose this book because she loves animal stories. But I have to say, our club gave it very high ratings. One of the best for this year!!! The characters were well developed and very endearing, not to mention the relationships with the animals especially Hannah.
We rate books 0-5. The story and style of the author is critiqued. We have 11 members who gave scores of 4.5 to 5!!!
Highly recommend this read. You won't be disappointed.
Thanks Valerie for picking the book... and to the author Diane Hammond great job!!! Write more!!! We loved it.

A Year of Books with my Book Club

OMBC reads one book a month which a member has chosen. Jan. book is always a Christmas gift. That month everyone reads a different one and gives a report in February. The following month have a been assigned to the 11 members, who host the meeting and must reveal the book to all of us the previous month.
On Christmas, it is a very fun meeting for all of us! Whomever turn it is to host, has a normal book discussion of her book then.... we celebrate the year of books. It is done with much thought and deliberation from each member. We bring a gift along with the new book. The gift is placed in a big black garbage bag. We want to be fair, especially being no one can seem to choose, which bag to pick. Everyone draws a number and that clarifies the time to make the decision for a bag.
Now everyone must remember those books they read this year. Thankfully, my daughter makes a special bookmark listing all the year end books. Because your gift must be an item that represents a book read!!! When you open the gift you must guess, what it represents and which book it has came from and also which member brought the gift. So you can see, much thought is put into the gift choosing process.
Oh yes, when you pick your bag, you may reveal a wrapped package from it's black bag. { The bag is so no one has seen who brought the gift. } Now when the next person's number is due, she may steal another gift from someone or get another black bag to open. What a fun evening to kick off the holiday season.
Now my dilemma... is what, will be my gift this year?!! So I have gathered all my books to trigger my memories. I do believe one is missing from the group, but I have my bookmark!

Victorian Life

Many Victorian homes had assistance with their household chores. I love my days off, but so many projects need to be done before heading back to work.
The weather is so cold today.... Would be great to heat up the house with baking and then sit by the wood stove and stitch. If I only had one of those Victorian maids. Instead we find ourselves
winterizing the home, which leads to fall cleaning and reorganizing the house. So now I have projects in every room.
Would the Victorian days be a good thing or Not....
Are women better off now ? Or better during those times...

Buck checking out our Cabin

The bucks are very busy chasing the Ladies in our area. This morning they were in our front yard and backyard. This one is a small one, but you have to love, how he was peeking around our light. He then decided, we were safe and crossed the yard to enter the forest. Hoping to find some special ladies just for him.
I just returned from a Victorian Stitchery Retreat in Wichita, Kansas. My fun stitching partner, Barb (SIL) drove together and learned many things!
I hope to tell you more later. I can report it was a great experience for both of us.

Pear Tree Autumn Splendor

Voting Day!!! Dh & I were on our morning am jaunt to vote in another small town. This caught my eye in the morning sunshine. The tree seem to be all alone in it's golden glory. The pears this year were small , the size of eggs. The cattle and horses have enjoyed them and a couple for us too.
My voting experience was changed this time. We had to go to a different town. They decided my town was a bit too small to count their votes. We traveled 10 miles to the next town. Seymour. which was established 1871. Late as towns go around here. I hear it became a town because the railroad was built through the area.
My biggest enjoyment of voting was in their community center was a quilt on the wall.
I ask, if it would be allowed for me to go behind the booths to see the quilt closer...
One of the nice ladies, believed it would be okay. So I signed in to vote then proceeded forward.
But I was thinking now, Promise City actually had enclosed booths to cast your vote. Seymour had tables set up with red/White/blue cardboard tri folder in which to keep your voting secret. Then as you left with your ballot a machine grabbed your paper for official counting. Quickly!! Look out fingers.
Then I proceeded to go to the back wall and check out the lovely quilt.
Flying geese around the border and blocks were crazy patched with vintage black & white photos of original town buildings and homes. Some of the blocks even had a couple setting on their front porch. The drug store with the soda fountain stools was eye catching also.
Wish I could of got a Picture, but that, I believed would of been frowned upon. I may have to come back, when the voters are not lined up to get behind those cardboard folders!

Weekend At E.R.

www.blankchildrens.org

Yet another busy weekend at the E.R.
Beautiful weather and several children were enjoying the weather. Several managed to get injured, plus some have already started the virus season of sickness.
After having a very busy Saturday, we decided for Sunday, we needed a potluck ! It was Pat's birthday. Sounded like a great excuse for us.
We also knew this would guarantee us to have some delicious food on a busy Sunday.
Gloria brought her great scratch oatmeal bread, Luanne brought an Apple dessert,
Dr. Chande potatoes with red peppers. and Tracey and I made the White Chili.
Did it ever hit the spot!!! We started the crock pot as soon as we started our shift. Everyone who is free will pitch in and help get things started. Then when hungry comes, whoever has a few free moments , can help their self to yummy food.

We like to share our recipes also...

White Chili

3 cooked chicken breasts- cooked in water with your favorite seasonings

then shredded.

Saute onion

3 can of Northern Beans

1 can Chicken Broth

1 can of Cream of Chicken

1 can White Corn

1/2 can green chili's chopped

Seasonings to taste, but we added a bit of....

White pepper, Crazy Mixed up Salt,

1 tsp of sugar
When serving up in your bowl add a dollop of sour cream and shredded cheese.

We doubled this recipe and put it in an extra large crock pot.

We have several residents, Doctors and extra help that comes and goes and can be quite hungry also!

LuAnne's Apple Dessert

1 Cup of Orange Juice

1 Cup of Sugar

1/8 tsp of Cinnamon

1/2 Cup of Butter

1 tsp of vanilla

Heat in Sauce pan, pour over...

Quartered apple - taking each quarter and wrap with a uncooked crescent roll.

Pour mixture over apples { 4 apples will make 1 tube of crescents rolls}

We doubled of course!

Bake in baking dish at 350 degrees for 30 minutes until brown and apples are soft.

Then at work each of us microwaved it to get that just from the oven feeling.

Gloria's bread, [she made sounded easy], but she grinds her own flour and oatmeal! She has a special touch. All of knows she has several ribbons from the State Fair! How we love her bread! I will have to have her write that one down for me, so I can give it a try.

Dr. Chande's Potatoes

Sauteed small chunks of white potatoes, red peppers in olive oil.

Secret ingredient is a touch of cumin.

Doesn't our potluck sound yummy?!

Last Day of October

While stopping at my son's home, I was awed at the beauty of these burning bushes.
He has been busy getting the crops in and helping with the cattle auctions, so great to catch him.
I will be off to the E.R. this weekend to work, while the rest of the Iowans, will be enjoying, the great Indian summer days.
I cannot complain as my 2 days at home have been beautiful as well. Never can turn away from being outside on a 70 degree day. Even if the Asian beetle {ladybugs] attack you while you are enjoying the weather. Guess they are taking advantage of the weather to get into a warm place before the cold returns.

Our Lives Are Patchwork

I
This small piece of crazy quilting i acquired this weekend at a auction.
When ever i obtain a piece, it leaves me to wonder about the life of the women who produced it.
Each small piece was carefully embroideried with colorful varied stitches.
and shows much care and love.
I feel blessed to be able to own it and feel some of the history and love.
"Our Lives are patchwork, and it depends on us a good deal how the bright and dark bits get put together so that the whole is neat, pretty, and useful when it is done... Every task, no matter how small or homely, that gets well and cheerfully done, is a fine thing; and the sooner we learn to use up the dark and bright bits {the pleasures and pains, the cares and duties} into a cheerful, useful life, the sooner wee become real comforters."

Foals Released

The last three foals were allowed to become part of the herd today. Much frolic and chasing went on, while they became reunited. It was a beautiful fall sunny day. We enjoyed moving them in together and watching the chase. The smallest one, we have special feelings for, as we spent much time saving his life, earlier this spring. It did our hearts good, to see him running so fast. While he enjoyed the rest of the gang!

Life is Fragile

The color pink, a favorite of a girl, who grew to be a mother, sister, daughter, and friend to many....
A small boy, remembering his mother, as he released pink balloons to the sky....

It is only after death that the depth of the bond is truly felt and our loved one becomes more a part of us than was possible in life."

Christmas Projects

It has been a rainy cool day and has me thinking that the season will be here soon.
Now to begin my Christmas projects. It felt good to stitch! Fall is always such a busy time and then the holidays are here. I have vision of many projects to complete and then I seem to run out of time! How does that happen?!
But, fall is always when I feel lead to start them.
Maybe next year sooner?.....

Drake Library Dome

"Knowledge is of two kinds. We know a subject ourselves, or we know where we can find information on it." Samuel Johnson

Drake Public Library

I love to do family research. This past week, my husband and I have been trying to connect a needlework, we have obtained. It was done in 1817. Which lead us to Centerville to the research library.
It truly is a remarkable library. They are in the process of renovated the building, but still continues to be a service to the community.
It was built in 1903. A gift from Civil War General F.M. Drake, former governor of Iowa and founder of Drake University. General Drake's resident at the time was on a mansion in the town of Centerville. He gave the library to the city of Centerville, Iowa ,on the condition, that they would continue to maintain and keep it serviceable. It now is 105 years old and a beautiful building. I kept getting distracted from from research, as I found so much to admire in this building.

West Baden Springs-Indiana

This is the back side of this beautiful building. It really is hard to do it justice with just a camera!

West Baden Springs

This is the vast free span dome of the historical hotel. It was originally named "Mile High Lick" in 1855. It was a very sophisticated resort which included on its grounds opera house, golf courses, church, ball field, and a pony and bicycle track. There also can be found a famous mineral springs on the grounds. So one of the grandest spas can be found here as well. One time in history, I heard it was dubbed the "Eighth Wonder of the World"
It has been newly renovated to once again be enjoyed by guests. I was content to walk under the dome and wonder at the majestic beauty of this place.

Sunshine Forever

Wonderful sunshine! Loving it always. Southern Indiana has much warmer temps then southern Iowa. Needless to say, these days are being enjoyed as i traveled to both states.
But, I do find myself recovering from much visiting and sightseeing with my sisters.
It feeds the soul to spend time with family and enjoy the bonus of beautiful weather.

Stream Cliff Farm

Front view of the Stream Cliff Farm Home at Commisky, Indiana.
I returned last night from a fun sister retreat. My sister had many great things to do and places to see.
Her house was beautiful and food delicious. This was one of my favorite places to visit. It is a early 1800s family farm. We had lunch at the herbal tea room and enjoyed walking the gardens. I have many pictures, so will share them later.
Now i must finish reading, Wednesday's Sisters. Book Club is tonight!

Sister Retreat Time

Time for the annual sister's retreat. This year it is at Louisville, Kentucky {approx}
The host this year, is my youngest sister Barb. It will be the first time to actually be at her house, for me, since she moved south. I hear, she is busy getting ready for all the sisters and Mom.
Leaving today, so need to run and pack up these gifts. I fixed tins that i decorated and put in some special treasures, and honey bee pots for everyone. Also a hostess basket for Barb.
We are the B sisters, as our mother was inspired to name us all with the letter B.
But, i am the Queen bee as i am her first born.

Book Club Friends

This morn was such a gorgeous day, that i could not resist having some deck time!! I grabbed my favorite favor of tea for the day and my latest read. Actually, i woke today and had a tremble that this was book club day! I had not even started the book!!

I usually wait till the week, before time to get that book read. This month, i have been absorbed in "World Without End".

Then happily i realized, i do have another week, yet to read this book.

Our OMBC always met on the first Wednesday of the month, at least for 8 years. But my job schedule has changed and i now work Wednesdays. So the beginning of this year, it touched my heart that the group changed the day to Tuesday. Thanks again everyone! I really feel it to be a joy of my life to share books, once a month.

So far the book is proving to be very good. It is about friendships and meeting to share each others dreams for writing. It reminds me of our club as our lives have changed through the years but we are consistant about meeting every month. Just like the authors does with the characters in the book.

If anyone is interested i recommend it so far.

Joy of fall sunshine

Joella and friend Allison enjoying a wonderful sunny fall day. Joella is sharing it with her friend from Junior High. They seem to be finding joy exploring the woods and getting quite a ride on Thumper and Spot. Hope you don't mind Maddy. Spot is Maddy's favorite horse. Needless to say, he needs much riding on the days you are unable to do it yourself.
You may notice Spot on the right and he is enjoying the ride as well...

Milk pods... when they look like this,
it means fall has arrived.
But what a beautiful sunny day!
I enjoyed every minute of it!!!
It was a warm 80 degrees with a lovely breeze.
So hope, we have a few more in store before
the snow flakes come...
Fall also brings my Sister's Retreat.
The first weekend in Oct. Looking forward to that also!!
Have a great week everyone.
I will be off to another few days at the E.R.

Time Passing

These caught my eye. They were tucked in each pew for guidance in singing at the Sharon Chapel.

One appears very much as in the age of the church and the other much more recent. Doesn't it speak volumes?

Time passes so quickly. Yet another summer is coming to a close as well. I have been enjoying the remains of sunny days. But i am feeling the need to get back to stitching. I have been working on moving my sewing room which requires several rooms to undergo a change as well. It seems to be moving slowly. Yesterday
I took my sewing machine to get tuned up for the fall sewing. I am going to have to kick it up a notch. I miss the time to create! Back to you, later after my weekend to work.

A Church Gone By...

Tonight was a auction of this little church. It's doors have been closed to the congregation since 2001. It can be found on a gravel road southeast of Centerville, Iowa.
The name is Sharon Chapel built 1890.
It also host a small cemetery in the backyard. Upon walking the grounds, it was noted many families of Appanoose county. The entrance stone stated, land donated by the McCoy family. The first row i found my ancestors of the late 1800s. It had several GAR stars at the graves , which means several patriots of the Civil War.
Three members remained in 2001. But one of those members was the minister! Wouldn't it of been a great day to see the curved pews filled with all the families who walked these lands.!!

Turkey babies

Looks like the turkey babies are becoming adults. They still hang with their mother.
Every morning, they work their way across the back of the yard looking for the many insects.. I believe they are drying their feathers, as they walk through the tall grass. This morn we counted 16 babies. I believe they must of adopted a another young one.
So glad they felt safe this am so we could enjoy the parade.

Fall Flowers

Rainy weather and approaching Fall season...
I love the changing of the seasons, but at the same time, i will miss the joys of the season left behind. Crisp fall weather has it joys but it also is the entrance for cold and freezing temperatures.
We have had so many rainy days this season. It has brought a beautiful growth of abundant yellows flowers everywhere. This is the first year i have seen them surround my pond. They can also be found along the roadside ditches. It has to be a gift from the many rains we have received! Hurricane is still pounding the gulf coast. Many of our U.S.C.G. are still hard at work.
Blessings and safety to our of neighbors to the South!

Hurricanes

Hurricane Ike has the Coast Guard heading out to help out the East Coast.
My son is one of them has flew out today.
They are always ready to protect and rescue those in need on our coast land.
Katrina required many, many helicopters and flight teams.
My heart and prayers to the families of the flight crew at Hawaii. Four brave men went down with their helicopter. I join with all the Coast Guardsman's, who mourn and search for the the 4Th man.
My prayers are with you, flight crews everywhere.

Tea the favorite drink

My lastest Auction find!
The yellow is a Hall with gold leaves and acorns.
Tea has always been my main drink of choice.
Now there is many more choices then when i was a girl.
You find the organic variety, and the blended herbs. Celestial Seasonings, who have many flavors to choose with great quotes on the box.
Tea to some come with many rules.
The traditional method of making a cup of tea is to place loose tea leaves, using a tea infuser into a tea pot. then steep hot water over a few minutes.
Black tea should be added at the boiling point of about 100 degrees. It is recommended the teapot be warmed before preparing tea. Add boiling water to the pot and swirling briefly before discarding. Brew for 4 minutes. If you brew longer it will make the tea bitter.
Green teas should only be steeped 30 seconds or no longer then 3 minutes. also must be brewed at a lower temperature. When you boil the water you reduce the amount of dissolved oxygen in the water thus changing the taste.
The theory is, some teas, help us boost the immune system. Another plus, for my favorite drink.
So tonight, i will be steeping me a cup of Raspberry Zinger, Celestial Seasoning.
Loaded with hibiscus, rose hips, chicory, blackberry and raspberry leaves.
My quote on the box tonight is: "Between true friends even water drunk together is sweet enough." Zimbabwean Proverb

Momma is taking very good care of her 15 babies.
Many predators are in our timber, so hopefully
i will continue to watch them grow.

Lost rural town

Mother and i went to visit my Dad's youngest brother yesterday.

We found ourselves in a town that has crumbled away. This is one of the only remaining buildings.

It does have the functioning post office attached to this beautiful sad building. So wish someone would renovate it again. A lot of work needs to be done and most of the buildings are now completely gone. A close neighboring rural town of Exline has been revived and looks wonderful! But so far, no one has approached this place.

If i had become rich & famous, it could of been a fun task for us. As my husband spent some childhood years running around and causing trouble here.
