Snow and more Snow

Day 2 of getting pounded with snowfall. It does make the forest fill with heavy branches that weep toward the beautiful white ground. But makes many cloudy days and keeps me indoors by the fire. Even today the snow has stopped, but skies remain cloudy. I think it's time to get under the Happy light. ;). A fun gift from my daughter. A great light to stitch away the blizzard, I must say.
Last summer I began a Christmas crazy quilt under Martha Green's directions.
I had decided to theme it to be after the song "Let It Snow". Never guessing It to become appropriate for this year. So far, I have completed the first block.


Need to start on another, but March has planned to be a busy month. I also have several small projects to complete by the end of the month.

Good news for us, is all that snow has brought our state closer to needed moisture. The drought has been hard on this state.
So many blessings from the beautiful wet snow!

Amelia Earhart

Winter storm is coming to a close and I have finished this great biography of a truly interesting life.
The author spent 10 years of research and you feel she had a personal interest to the life of A.E. The author's grandmother was a flyer and a member of the Ninety Nines an organization formed by Amelia Earhart for female flyers.
She was a strong advocate for equal rights for women. She loved adventure but always stayed focus on the rights for women.
I learned so many interesting stories of our history. Her connection to Eleanor Roosevelt, Gene Vidal, her work in Social Service and nursing. Her life journey was filled with concerns for others along with her desire for adventure!
Who knew...she even designed clothing for women. I did not! Did you?






She was the author of books, worked at Purdue University, Cosmopolitan magazine, wrote poetry. And planned flights in airplanes in the beginning of aviation creation. Wow. So i felt the need to watch Amelia with Hillary Swank and I found it used for 2.99! Looking forward to it seeing it again.
I leave you with a fragment of one of her poems

Snow and Garden planning?!

Super snow heading to the Midwest. It is blowing hard with winter snowflakes now.
So very glad I had fun yesterday thinking of gardening and springtime.



On one of the blogs I follow... I found a tip about winter seed sowing 101 at...
Agardenformyhouse.com. Thought I would try his plan. You use milk jugs open and leave a hinge, along with drainage holes, so it can be taped back, label of course.
Then you you place outside and let the snow fly.
That was yesterday's project.



-Some seed types seem to benefit by the cold freeze and insulation from the milk jugs. Thanks to my daughter, who with her young son goes through Lots of milk jugs these days.
Today though, the mailman brought the rest of my seeds ordered from seed saver exchange in Decorah, Iowa They have only heirloom seeds truly organic. So will plant them at a later time.
I will have to let you know how they turn out.

Feedback History

Iowa history is always a fascinating subject to me and this morning, I noticed a post from Quilt With Us at Lucas. A interesting history event happening this coming Saturday.


Quilt With Us
This Saturday, Feb 23, at 10 am in the Lucas Fire Station, the Chariton and Lucas quilt guilds are offering a FREE program to everyone that is interested in feed sacks and/or Iowa history!! Michael Zahs will be presenting "Iowa History in a Cloth Bag". This porgrams explains how cloth bags and the revolutionary idea of marketing to women helped Iowans survive the Great Depression and the shortages of World War II. Flour sacks, feed sacks and seed sacks will tell the story from relief work by Herbert Hoover to clothes and quilts in the 1950’s. Michael has given programs on state and local topics for over 35 years. He is very involved in historic preservation, log buildings, cemetery work, and state and local Iowa history.

Of course, I googled Michael Zahs and he was picked teacher of the year a few times and quite a historian on 200 years of Iowa history.
I have studied some about the feed sack history from Cindy Brick and classes taken at Paducah, Kentucky. But never seem to get enough of more facts. History is always finding new discoveries and gives us so much more to learn. My roots run deep into Iowa history and is now and always will be one of my favorite subjects.
So sounds like road trip for me.

Valentine Projects

Valentine Day can be fun when you begin thinking of all the special people to give and make those special Valentines. It does bring in my family many special day combinations.....My eldest daughter celebrates her anniversary on this day. My sister, Brenda her birthday. But the...
Two little grandchildren always require a special gift..
The picture of the pillows are what I made yesterday, for Hudson and my great granddaughter Laura.
I thought it would be fun to use one of their grandpa's flannel shirts and a pair of my socks. Not sure what, they are suppose to be....maybe a quirky monster. Anyway, they are very soft and can be quite cuddly under a small head.



While I was working on the pillows yesterday. Their grandpa decided to repair
Little Hudson's favorite tractor. He got creative also, as he had to make a new chassis and 4wheels out of wood. He seem very please with the remodeled tractor but not yet the pillow. It got a smile maybe when it is nap time. Too busy now!


I also made a lavender scented heart to put in my sisters package. Which is off to the mail now. Not sure, what to do for the the teen granddaughters...
And 16th anniversary gift. Oh and what about all the rest of my family. Sorry did not start soon enough family I believe... But I Love them all very much!

Poor winter chickens

Chickens if anyone remembers ,... I posted earlier about beginning to raise chickens due to the strong request from our granddaughter. -
Last summer, she enjoyed taking care and collecting eggs, but alas fall arrived. Maddy must Return home to school. The chicken farm fell to our care.
Which i must say, we have been enjoying those delicious fresh eggs for breakfast.
But the last few days have been the coldest sub zero temperatures in 2 years! Iowa has been having great weather but now it lays with snow and COLD.
We have been turning on the heat lamps and turned the heater on the water.
Sadly, last night the heat lamp burned out! How those chickens must of done some cuddling. They were all alive, but un able to give eggs. Mr rooster had some frostbite on his comb. Guess he did not cuddle with the girls!
We have replaced the lamp for tonight. I found this picture on Pinterest by Lisa Stockebrand, today. It got me thinking, I Bet Mr. Rooster wished he had that hat last night!
